q: how did quinn and alexis meet?
a: the two were introduced by chris veltri, owner of legendary record shop groove merchant in san francisco. veltri and luke had made a pair of plunderphonic dusted disco 12 inches under the name coppa. georgopoulos was a founder of the group tussle and asked if coppa would do a tussle remix. this led to luke acting as producer on the tussle album telescope mind.

this is a well-rounded compilation of material from various plan b recordings artists. up first is dakini9s remix of >swine<, a track originally made by spider & lola. this is a deep, minimal techno track, with squealing pigs and industrial sounds which were recorded in pig slaughter houses and have been layered throughout the track. second up is courages >mildred< track. this is one of those tracks that just makes you want to dance, period. this is from his >feast or famine ep<, which will be coming out later this year. the third track is from detroits very own bileebob (underground resistance, detroit grand pubahs), who teams up with his agriculture partner, marshallito. here we have an amazing array of driving drumbeats and chaotic synth work that blends perfectly together for an infectious, grooving dance floor banger! the final track is from dj spider: a deep house track, with a funky bass line, nice synth work and a good driving beat. this house track completes the compilation and also gives you a taste of the diversity of this labels sound.

tbd first made a noteworthy noise with the release of >what is this?<, their 2009 debut that found favor with critics, djs and audiences for both its seditious take on dance music – and avoidance of worn-out conventions – and sheer sublimity. it was fitting success for an outfit founded by two musicians who, bored by the sounds around them, set out to >create something new, fresh and not confined by restrictive genre pigeonholing.< on the heels of that pitch-perfect release, as well as remixes for luminaries including permanent vacation, runaway, 2020 soundsystem and populette, to name just a few, tbd – comprising rong musics lee douglas and ex-!!!/outhud bassist and producer justin vandervolgen – is back with a 12 inch of idiosyncratic new music.

back again we have the mediterranean flavor of the friends affkt and alberto sola. always experimenting with different ingredients like the cooker ferran adria, the guys who laid the first stone of the legendary label barraca, now present a hybrid of pop and house which will leave no one indifferent. ‘pobla loves you’ was born with the tuba of alberto cuartero, orchestra director of hoya gonzalo in albacete. marc and alberto (affkt and sola) wanted to have a typical instrument of a band and merged it with the electronic dance scene, always being faithful to his maxim of making music to dance as well as to listen. if we surround valencia, road to pobla de farnals, we passed through la canada. there are los updates, who upon hearing the organic rhythm of pobla and the work with the wind instruments, set to work with the voices. perfectly adapted to the capital of the turia river, jorge and loreto propose a valencian poem that their children have learned at school. the moon of valencia then join our dinner for four. finally, we add to our paella a bit of percussion and keyboards made in affkt, to get a main course and obtain a typical valencian plate but by adding a little chilean salt becomes international. more oriented to the dance floor, there are three rather different remixes. new union between spain and chile, with danny fiddo and felipe venegas. this couple present an elegant and deep remix with drums and vocals perfectly adapted to the current sound. moreover, the french man darlyn vlys re-interpreted >pobla loves you< with a lot of groove and percussion added. finally, affkt gives his funker version of events to complete a job that will come out by the german label international freakshow

big with karotte, len faki, paco osuna, gregor tresher, hugo, laurent garnier and many more! amam is the new label from bright young italian producer alessio mereu, who has already made a name for himself releasing on labels like contexterrior, cmyk and toys for boys. while amams first release found alessio going solo, this time hes half the duo of pet soul boys alongside barcelona-based coyu -- you might have heard his productions and remixes that have appeared on diynamic, 2020 vision, liebe detail and saved. the debut psb single from earlier this year, >calypso soul< on hypnotone, was played by the likes of paul woolford, nick curly and italoboyz. not so bad for a couple of guys in their early 20s!

who said the wait wouldnt be worth it? the brothers in house fritz zander and sven von thülen have made themselves somewhat scarce over the past year. after having impressed in 2008 with their ep >get up<, remixes for artists including ratman, elphine and oorsprong, and tracks on the watergate 02 compilation, their audible activities the following year remained confined to fritz zanders superb 12 inch >connection< and successful compilation appearances on >ten years cocoon ibiza< and >time warp<. now there is finally something new, and the current zander vt release certainly lives up to the promise of its title: >some more< picks up where >get up< left off. its fourno-frills house pearls prove resoundingly that continuity doesnt have to entail standing still.

white label/stamped repress! the second release on the m>o>s record label could have been part of hollands rich techno-history, if released when the tracks where made. dating back as early as 1993, these two tracks come straight out of a plastic bag full of sa90 tapes in ross154s bathroom (thats where he plays his music loud) and a cardboard box filled with cassettes rediscovered while moving aroy dee into his way too expensive spacious loft in the historical centre of amsterdam.

the first teaser from the long awaited second album of phil mison (aka cantoma) comes in a true idjut boy haze. reminiscent of early u star at its best, their remix of >north shore< is one of the most locked-in grooves we have heard for some time. the vocal version sucks you into an almost trance like fashion and is purely made for the late night hours on a sweaty dancefloor. hearing this on a big system is truly a spiritual experience. the instrumental ties down an amazing second 12 inch for leng and gives us further excitement on the release of the second cantoma album. simply terrific.
